We run into this a lot of time with our customers. Companies over the years have purchased many different software packages and do not have good tools in place to keep track of usage or the maintenance contracts.
So what do you do when you find you are over licensed with your software? Good question… Most software companies make it difficult and cost prohibitive to reduce license counts under the terms of their maintenance agreement. In most cases they will want to charge you list price for the reduced number of seats and ends up costing more than your original contract. It sounds crazy but sometimes it is cheaper to purchase new licenses in the long run.
